Green Weeks: Sick so juice your heart out

Green Weeks, Day Three

It's Wednesday! That means we have reached our half way point for the work week (hopefully... depending on when your work week starts... or if it ever ends.)

I'm sick. Well, I have a cold. For the last two years I have not been sick at all. In those two years, I cleaned up my diet completely. I was completely raw vegan for 8 months and since then have not eaten much, if any, processed foods for a very very very long time. I love eating this way, especially since I haven't gotten sick at all. Until now. Boo. I guess it was bound to happen and I'm sure my weekend extra curricular activities (wine Thursday, Friday, and Saturday last weekend) did not help with my immune system. So, in order to combat this cold's symptoms and get my body feeling better I've been drinking two green juices a day.

A little green FYI: When the body's immune system is down you get sick. Most sicknesses are caused, or better explained by why you get sick, when the body's alkalinity (pH) becomes overly acidic. Acidity in the body creates an environment for disease and sickness to thrive in, and weakens all systems of the body. A healthy body, on the other hand, is one that is neutral, or alkaline, and maintains alkaline reserves for the times when sickness and disease may try to sneak in.

The best way to get your body back to alkaline is to consume greens (leafy greens), veggies (root vegetables), and fruits, and best taken in their raw state. This is why I am juicing my heart out. Juicing provides all of the minerals, nutrients, and alkalinity needed by the body. Juicing enables the body to take in all of these things without interruption from the fiber whole vegetables and fruits contain.

Take a look at this acid/alkaline food chart for more ideas on what foods help with alkalizing the body.

The best juices for immunity include a variety of leafy greens such as lettuces, spinach, kale, parsley, etc., and lemon and ginger.

Green Juice of the Day

  • celery
  • fennel bulb
  • romaine leaves
  • green apple
  • red cabbage
  • lime
  • ginger
Juice all and enjoy.

Also, I'm needing to up my vitamin C levels while fighting this cold. The plethora of oranges I have laying around the kitchen will do quite nicely.

One other little green tidbit to throw your way... my new favorite online store for raw goodies is having a St. Patty's Day sale (and today's the last day!!!) on some of their green dessert bites! Head on over to Pure2Raw.com's store and get yourself some alkalizing, raw, and lovely green Mint Chip Kremes or the Green Cookies. Even better, they have brownie bites, raw macaroons, and more to order. Yummmmmm!
The Mint Chip Kremes look good, don't they?!

What is your best cold or sickness remedy?

What is your secret formula for wellness?

hi lori! i'm actually in the exact same boat right now - haven't gotten sick in nearly two years but just got a cold last week - i have found that the recovery time is a lot faster/smoother than it ever has been in the past! best cold/sickness remedies = soaking feet in hot water every night (gets blood flowing really well), also sleeping a LOT... eating some raw honey always seems to be good as well

Natalie- Thank you so much for the great ideas to help combat this cold! I will try soaking my feet... if anything it will just feel good! And for the sleep part, I've been going to bed at about 8-8:30 pm. So early but I'm also waking up at 5:40 am to go to the gym.. I know, NOT the way to take care of my body but a good sweat from kickboxing "knocks" the cold away for the hour I'm there.

So, Lori, I guess I didn't realize you were a raw vegan, I thought you were just a vegan? Interesting! Sure does make me wonder why you read my blog though....when I'm definitely not a raw vegan! But, honestly, thanks for your support in reading it!

Hope you start to feel better soon!
